The taste is very close to their boiled meat slices and boiled fish, the price is lower, and the seasoning package for cured meat is missing. There is only 1 oil pack inside. The bean paste flavor has a much weaker onion, ginger and garlic flavor. Overall, I prefer this one. It tastes like the one in the store, the difference is that it doesn't have the strong ginger flavor in the store, and I didn't thicken it. The finished product has bright red oil, not too spicy (I really think the boiled pork slices are a bit spicy for me 😔), the tofu doesn't even need to be cooked for a long time, and the taste is in 2 minutes. But... hemp 😭.

I've bought this countless times; it's super delicious and authentic. It's also incredibly tasty when used to braise dishes or seafood. I usually add a tiny bit of water to prevent it from being too dry and to mellow the flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

We answer everything you want to know about Mapo.

What is Mapo tofu and what does it taste like?

Mapo tofu is a world-famous Sichuan dish known for its 'mala' (numbing and spicy) flavor. It traditionally consists of soft silken tofu, ground meat (beef or pork), and a rich sauce made from Pixian doubanjiang (fermented chili bean paste), Sichuan peppercorns, and chili oil. At Yami, you can find ready-to-use Mapo sauce to recreate this classic at home.

How do I make authentic Mapo tofu at home?

The secret to authentic Sichuan Mapo tofu lies in high-quality Pixian doubanjiang and freshly ground Sichuan peppercorns. For the best results, blanch your silken tofu in salted water first to keep it from breaking, and use a dedicated Mapo tofu sauce from brands like Haorenjia or Lee Kum Kee available on Yami.

Are there vegetarian or vegan Mapo tofu options?

Yes! Many brands now offer vegetarian Mapo tofu and vegan Mapo tofu sauce options that use plant-based proteins or mushrooms instead of ground meat. You can easily find these specialized sauces on Yami.com by filtering for your dietary preferences.

Is Mapo tofu always very spicy?

While traditional Sichuan Mapo tofu is known for its intense heat, there are many variations. Japanese Mapo tofu (Mabo Dofu) is often milder and slightly sweeter, making it a great choice for those who prefer less spice. Yami carries both fiery Sichuan styles and mild Japanese-style sauces.

What should I serve with Mapo tofu?

Mapo tofu is best served piping hot over a bowl of steamed white jasmine rice. To balance the richness and spice, it is often paired with refreshing side dishes like smashed cucumber salad, stir-fried greens (bok choy), or a light egg drop soup.
