二、理性选择理论
经济学假定，人们在作行动决策时都是“理性的”，会选择能最有效地实现个人利益的那种行动。这一假定实际上给我们提供了一种分析经济问题的独特方法，即假定每个人会根据具体情况来理性行事的理性选择方法。
就理性选择方法而言，在传统上它一直作为经济学家所专有的方法而存在。不过，在最近几十年中理性选择开始受到其他学科的关注。最初，构成经济学基础的理性选择假设给其他学科的研究者带来了极大的困惑：用一种过于简化、有时甚至是充满主观想象的假设来分析复杂的社会生活，这如何可能呢？不过，近些年来理性选择方法本身的发展使人们的这种困惑减轻了许多。经济学家力图通过“经济人”这一关于个人行为的假定来推测人们在经济生活中的表现。并且，许多出身于经济学阵营的学者相信，这种关于人的行为的假定适用于所有的社会领域，因而可以用理性选择理论来分析个人乃至集体的任何行为。在一批持此假定的经济学家的努力下，近年来理性选择作为一种最基本的分析方法已渗透于许多领域中，如布坎南的公共选择理论（政治领域）、贝克尔对人类行为的“经济分析”（家庭、社会等领域）。此外，来自其他学科的研究者也开始在理性选择方法的基础上展开本学科的研究，社会学家科尔曼（J.Coleman）就是其中的代表人物。科尔曼的社会理论是建立在行动理论的基础之上的，而这种行动理论又正是以理性选择方法为依托的。科尔曼借助于经济学中的“合理性”概念来分析理性行动者的行动。他认为“合理性”概念的含义是指“对行动者而言，不同的行动（在某些情况下是不同的商品）有不同的‘效益’，而行动者的行动原则可以表述为最大限度地获取效益。”这包含着两方面的意思：①个人行动是有目的的行动；②个人行动是一种最大限度地获取效益的合理行动（科尔曼，1990）。在一定程度上，这种理论其实是经济学的行动理论在社会学中的翻版。
一个非常有意思的现象是，一方面，理性选择方法在经济学以外的领域影响力日益扩大；另一方面，它仍然受到许多批评。作为经济学关于人类行为的基本假定，行动决策时的理性选择在以下几个方面可能存在着一些问题：
（1）新古典经济学假设行动决策是在充分信息的基础上作出的，从而个人的行为选择将是理性的。这种经济人“知道自己可以选用的一切备选方案，能确定其中的每个备选方案可能产生的一切后果，然后在比较和评价这些后果的基础上选择出能给他带来最大利益的那个可行方案……”（杨春学，1998：167）。行动决策者掌握充分信息构成了理性选择的出发点。
