更进一步地说，这些具有创见的物理学家，没有人认为现代物理学支持神秘体验论或宗教的世界观。他们认为现代物理学只是不再“反对”宗教的世界观，因为现代物理学比起古典物理学更能意识到自己的局限和片面，尤其在处理终极实相方面。爱丁顿同样也引用了柏拉图的比喻：“物理学坦承它只能处理阴影部分，这是近代最重要的进展。”

本书责编托我妻师宁带来这本书并请我写序之前，我早已知道作者威尔伯(Ken Wilber)，但并未读过他的书。
没有读的原因，表面上看来是他的著作之厚重，使我觉得抽不出时间，往深处说则是他的思想之渊博，使我对他十分敬重。
1998年秋，在北京的一次学术交流会议后，我在餐桌上与一位美国人偶然相逢，聊了几句正待出版的我编译的《蒂里希选集》(尤其是其中的《系统神学》)。他似乎为这样艰深的书有了中译本而惊叹，又问我是否读过威尔伯，我说不知是何方神圣，他遂说要送我一本。我既对威氏一无所知，又同那位萍水相逢者毫无交情(至今连相貌也想不起来，只记得他对蒂里希非常钦佩)，事后很快就忘了。所以，不久之后真的收到了他从美国寄来的书时，我很为他的“言必信”而惊奇，更为威氏的这本书而惊奇——八百几十页的精装书重得像一块砖，封面上的评语赫然跃入眼帘：“所有出过的书中意义最重大者之一！”封底的评语分量更重，例如：“《性、生态与灵性》涉及范围极其宏大，自始至终充满洞见，极度鼓舞人心。威尔伯从各门物理科学、生物科学和人文科学汇集材料，帮助我们把世界作为一个整体来看待，使我们摆脱了那些只看人类经历的狭隘观点。这本书会改变历史！”又如：“威尔伯的这本书改变着一切。他是我们时代最伟大的系统思想家之……”，“21世纪确实有三个选择：亚里士多德，或尼采，或威尔伯。这本新书以惊人的学术广度和深度写成，恰恰是新世纪和新千纪我们急需的良药：不仅因为它将治愈我们，而且因为它能震醒我们”，等等，等等。

后来又听老友许金声提起这位奇才，其钦佩之情溢于言表，也给我留下了深刻的印象。金声长时间深研西方心理学与人格发展理论，介绍马斯洛等心理学大师的理论，而且已经开始翻译威尔伯的书，所以，我想他的推崇是有充分理由的。从金声的介绍，我也知道了威氏起码是所谓“后人本心理学”的代表人物。当然，我最深的印象，依然是威氏对宇宙发展作整体研究的宏大气魄，尽管这种印象会使人有点敬而远之。
然而，《恩宠与勇气》(原书名，下同)一下子使威尔伯与普通读者拉近了距离，因为这本书描写的是他自己的爱情生活和难忘的个人经历，“是他难得的感性作品”。胡因梦说她译此书而“自疗”人生，我虽不能像南方朔先生那样深入全面地评介此书，但只读到威尔伯与崔雅恋爱的起头，就有—个感觉：正如崔雅克服了对他的“光头”的不习惯，而坠入爱河，我和其他读者也应克服对“大砖”的敬畏，而去了解这位奇才的思想。
何况，这本书本身不只是一段惊心动魄的爱情的真实叙述——用死者的日记和生者的回忆构成的独特实录，而且是一种广泛而深入的探索的真诚思考——对生命与死亡、疾病与治疗、肉体与心灵、智慧与宗教等等的独特思考。换言之，阅读此书，不仅可以了解这位奇才其人，而且可以了解他的博大思想。
