In traditional Chinese medicine, licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) is renowned for its effects of replenishing spleen qi, clearing heat and detoxifying, relieving cough and reducing phlegm, alleviating spasms and pain, and harmonizing various herbs. It effectively addresses symptoms like fatigue and poor appetite due to spleen deficiency, sore throat and oral ulcers caused by heat toxins, and cough with phlegm. Modern research shows it contains glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhetinic acid, which have anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, and immune-regulating properties, helping soothe the respiratory and digestive mucous membranes. However, compound preparations with opium powder (e.g., compound licorice tablets) have potent antitussive effects but may cause dependence with long-term use.
Guolao, Sweet Grass, Ural Licorice, Liquorice, Mi Gan
Tastes sweet; neutral in nature; enters the Heart, Lung, Spleen, and Stomach meridians
Licorice is rich in active components. Glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhetinic acid are key, exerting anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and liver-protective effects. Flavonoids in licorice have antioxidant and free-radical scavenging abilities. Compound licorice preparations may contain opium powder (for antitussive action, with dependence risk), camphor, and star anise oil (to promote phlegm discharge). These components work together to relieve cough, reduce inflammation, and protect mucous membranes.
