本书是叶嘉莹先生在新加坡国立中文大学教授清词的讲课稿，由讲课录音整理而成，按照从明末清初到晚清的时间顺序，介绍了清代词目前的十位重要词人：李雯、吴伟业、陈维崧、朱彝尊、张惠言、蒋春霖、王鹏运、郑文焯、朱祖谋、况周颐。词源于唐五代，盛于宋，历元明而兴于清，但相比唐宋词，人们对于清词知之有限。叶嘉莹先生很早就已经认识到了清词的重要性，对词的美感特质和对清代词人隐藏在词作后的心态，以及清词创作的外部环境，都给予了关注。清代的社会剧变与大量才智之士加入创作队伍，造就了以委婉曲折之形、发心中幽微之情的清词，词至清代达到了一个全盛的时代。
