Red bean soup is perhaps the most famous type of Tongsui (a Cantonese-dessert type; literal translation means “sugar water”). It’s one of the healthiest dessert options and a great source for protein and fiber.
It’s prepared by cooking adzuki beans, sugar, and tangerine peels in water. Simmered until the texture becomes a bit sandy, as its Cantonese name “HungDauSaa” (literal translation of “red bean sand”) has suggested. This is a popular menu item at most Chinese dessert shops and often served after dinner either hot or cold as it’s believed to reduce bloating after a big meal.
