This seminal 1971 work by Skinner makes a clear statement about humans and society.
Beyond Freedom and Dignity argues that only by dealing more effectively with human behavior can the problems of the world today be solved. It proposes that we must drastically revise our traditional concepts of freedom and dignity. Although these concepts have played an important historical role in our struggle against various tyrannies, they now make us rely on punishment, thus hindering the development of more effective cultural practices.
Skinner's extensive experimental analysis of behavior forms the basis for his views. He rejects the traditional explanation of behavior in terms of mental states, emotions, and other psychological characteristics, arguing that behavior can be explained only through the interaction of genetic endowment and personal experience. Instead of advocating freedom and dignity as personal characteristics, he suggests focusing attention on the physical and social environments in which people live. To achieve the traditional goals of freedom and dignity, the environment must be changed, not human nature itself.
